What WWW Is

 

Women's Wilderness Weekend was established as a project of Trailblazer RC&D in Red Cloud, Nebraska. This workshop is designed for women 18 years of age or older who wants to learn outdoor skills.  A variety of skills associated with hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and bird watching, but useful in a variety of outdoor pursuits, will be taught.   

This is the tenth year for the Women's Wilderness Weekend.  Last year one hundred and fifteen (115) women attended.  

This workshop is for you if:

You have never tried any of the activities, but would like to learn.

You are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills.

You would like to try your hand at some new activities.

You are looking for the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

Handgun Basics: George Sund, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Conservation Officer and Firearm Safety Instructor.  George has been a conservation officer and firearms safety instructor since 1974. Handgun selection and safety will be covered. Try several handguns on the shooting range.  

Golf Outing:  Play a round of nine holes at the Alma Golf Course. Local experts will be on hand to offer suggestions and tips for playing the game. Bring your own clubs if you have them.

Overnight Camp Out & Canoe Trip: (Must also register for Session II, Course C.Gary Tordrup, K-State Extension Agent and Dave Beins, outdoor enthusiast. Begins with a canoe trip down the Republican River. The group will camp out in tents and cook over the campfire. The trip continues down the Republican River and returns to the 4-H Camp the following day. 

Water Sports: Arlen Mickelsen and Kevin Barber, Superior Outdoor Power. Arlen and Kevin have been providing jet skiing demonstrations at area lakes for nine yearsBring your swimsuit, towel, and suntan lotion and enjoy the refreshing and invigorating water sports. There will be separate sessions for beginners and advanced skiers.

Sailing:  Harlan Yacht Club Members.  The Harlan Yacht Club members will give a brief overview of the different types of sailboats.  Spend some time on the water and enjoy the thrill of sailing.

Navigation Basics: Linda Dannehl, UNL Extension Assistant.  Learn the basics of navigation using a compass and handheld global positioning system (GPS). Use your new knowledge to go on a scavenger hunt.

Wind Surfing: Karen Marriott, outdoor enthusiast of Denver, CO and member of the 2006 U.S. Sailing TeamKaren has been wind surfing for 15 years and travels extensively to instruct this sport. 

Beginning Archery:  Shelly Wingard, Cabela's; Wayne Peshek, certified archery and hunter education instructor; and Dave Woods, archery enthusiast.  Shelly, Wayne, and Dave have over 95 years of combined archery experience. Learn about the different types of bows and arrows, safety, and hunting techniques.  Practice on the shooting range.

White Bass Fishing:  Tall Tales.  Local fishing experts will lead you in search of white bass. These fish will drive minnows up to the surface, which are eaten by sea gulls. Follow the gulls and find the fish. A fishing license is required.

Astronomy: George Probasco, Holdrege Educational Service Unit.  George has taught science for 40 years and been involved in star lab workshops since 1980. This session will be in the star lab, indoors with lights representing the stars, looking at constellations and discussion about geological forces on earth. Learn constellation identification and mythology. 

Late Night Fishing: Guides: Sponsored by Tall Tales Lounge. Local fishing experts will lead the group in search of catfish and white bass.  Fishing techniques will be demonstrated on the boats. A fishing license is required. 

Theatre of the American West: Now playing—Annie Get Your Gun. There is a $ 10.00 charge for this event.

4-Wheel Jeeping A group of local Jeep enthusiasts will give rides in their Jeep along the shore of the Harlan County Lake. Enjoy the latest craze in local outdoor recreation.

Guided Nature Walk: Eric Volden, Grand Island.  Eric has been an outdoor enthusiast all his life.  He is especially interested in birds, butterflies and prairies.   Here’s your chance to get some hiking in while learning about the plants and animals we encounter during the guided morning hike. Plant and animal folklore, bird calls, track identification, fall flowers and leaves and insect natural history are just a few of the subjects we'll discuss. 

Intro to Scuba Diving: Instructor: Joe and Donna Tyler of Husker Divers. Though you will not receive certification for this course, you will get to try on diving equipment and try it out in the Alma swimming pool. Find out why diving is so addictive and is one of the fastest growing sports. Bring along you swimsuit and a towel.  This session is for individuals who have never experienced the thrill of diving. 

Mountain Biking: John Wayne, Wayne Cyclery, Grand Island.  In this class John will cover basic repairs that scare many people away from riding bikes.  Go for a ride and use the information you learned. 

Beginning Horseback Riding:  Dave Wolf, local riding expert. Dave will help you learn beginning horsemanship and care. Learn how to saddle up your horse and take a trail ride.

Outdoor Photography: Jeanne Griffith, professional photographer.  Jeanne owns a photography business in Oxford.  This session will cover equipment needs, environmental conditions, and how to get the best outdoor pictures.  Bring along a camera and film and try out your new skills.  

Dutch Oven Cooking: Susan Rhynalds, Oxford.  Susan has been experimenting with Dutch oven cooking for over 15 years.  If you love the outdoors, have an addiction for campfire smoke, and dislike cold sandwiches, you'll love this session.  Dutch oven cooking techniques will be demonstrated to cook a three course meal.  Sample the results of the cooking demonstration.

Exploring Old Republican City:  Jerry Waldo and Wayne Page.  This town now lies under water of Harlan County Reservoir.  In August when the lake is lower, you are able to walk down the streets of the old town,  viewing foundations where buildings once stood.  Jerry Waldo and Wayne Page both lived and graduated from school there.  They will give you the history of the flood, moving the old town, and construction of the dam.  They will share memories as they show you points of interest.  Bring along a metal detector as many old coins and artifacts are found annually.

Pioneer Trail:  Lorraine McClain, McClain's Ranch, Republican City.  Take a hayrack ride through cottonwoods and onto the Indian burial ground and cave where Buffalo Bill once slept. Tour includes farm animals and buildings, and a demonstration on jelly making, as well as learning the history of the area. Also enjoy a dutch oven meal. Wear long pants and hiking shoes.

Beginning Canoeing: Gary Tordrup and Neal Rhynalds, outdoor enthusiast.  Gary is an experienced canoeist of 25 years and Neal is an avid outdoor enthusiast.  Learn about different types of canoes, paddles and their application, as well as paddling techniques. Rain or shine, participants will canoe the Republican River or a cove of Harlan County Lake. 

Women's Self Defense I & II:  Officer Rose Witt, Hastings.  Rose is a certified Pressure Point Control Tactics Management Systems and Sexual Harassment, Assault and Rape Prevention Instructor.  This course will help women manage and cope with issues they can control through physical countermeasures and prevention techniques. This course will be instruction only.

Beginning Fly Fishing:   Randy Wilson, Product Specialist from Cabela's.  Randy will help you learn the basics of fly fishing, including equipment needs and casting techniques.  Try out your new skills at a local pond. Wear long pants and hiking shoes.

Shotgun Basics: George Sund, Nebraska Game and Parks commission Conservation Officer and Firearm Safety Instructor.  George will lead this session on firearm safety principles.  Try out your skills with a shotgun while shooting at clay pigeons.

Primitive Skills I & II B.J. Spring, Lincoln, NE. B.J. has been teaching primitive skills classes for seven years within the Lincoln Public Schools, at community colleges, and at Pioneer Park. In session I, learn how to make your own bow drill tools to make fire and how to build a primitive shelter. In session II, learn the basics of survival needs if you become lost in the wild. Also learn basic hunting skills.

Black Powder & Muzzleloading: Dave Beins, black powder shooter/hunter for over 10 years.  In this session, Dave will introduce you  to black powder shooting, including percussion and flintlock rifles, safety loading, and cleaning and care. Try out a muzzle loader on the shooting range. 

Basic Horticulture:  Andrea Votaw. Local experts will present information and discussion of plants, both perennials and annuals. They will demonstrate how to select proper plants for a planter for the yard, patio and/or deck. Time for a question-and-answer session will follow the hands-on activities.

Boat Tour of Lake: Tom Zikmund, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Ranger. Tom will lead the discussion of the Harlan County Reservoir as you travel around the lake on a pontoon boat. Learn about the construction of the lake and local history.

Wild Turkey Hunting: Randy Wilson, Product Specialist, Cabela's. Randy, a big game hunter, will discuss Nebraska's wild turkey population. Scouting, setup, decoys and calling will be covered. Information presented will be used for hunting or photography of wild turkeys.

Boating Basics: Darrell Teeter, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Darrell has been an officer for 17 years and much of his time has been involved with boating enforcement and investigation. He will demonstrate the boating rules and regulations.

Taxidermy: Tim Miller, Alma. Tim has over 12 years of taxidermy experience. Learn the basic care of game after harvest. Watch Tim demonstrate how to make your trophy come alive.  

Iron Woman:  This session will include three grueling events to determine who is the Women's Wilderness Weekend Iron Woman for 2006.  All participants will compete in the Run and Shoot Archery event,  Blue Rock Shoot, and Obstacle Course.  Points will be awarded for each event and will be used to select the WWW Iron Woman.
