St. John’s Plans for 125th Anniversary
St. John’s Lutheran Church – Shell Creek, in rural Columbus, celebrated 125 years of serving and praising God on Sunday, September 17, 2006. The celebration began with a worship and Holy Communion service at 10:00 a.m. conducted by Bishop Dr. David L. deFreese, Nebraska Synod, ELCA, assisted by Rev. Peter Jark-Swain, the current pastor. A catered noon meal was served in a large tent next to the church.
There was a history presentation telling stories of the past 125 years and how they all tie together relating to the surrounding land in Platte and Colfax counties, the Shell Creek area, the city of Columbus and when St. John’s Lutheran Church was established on October 9, 1881, with the adoption of the first constitution.
The day of special activities continued at 2 p.m. with special music by Columbus’ own Rachel Scott, greetings from former pastors and family members, and memories of the past from the congregation. A cake reception with fellowship time followed. Artifacts and pictures were displayed to help complete the story of St. John’s history. Next history page
