Along with the move a number of new features have been added. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office will become more efficient when handing out traffic warnings and citations. A $1.5 Million federal grant awarded to the Nebraska Crime Commission has allowed for “E-Citations” software and equipment to be obtained by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, the State Patrol Carrier Enforcement and 11 other law enforcement agencies. The new software allows law enforcement to capture information from a drivers license, input data and then print either a warning or citation from a printer inside the patrol unit.

Currently five Platte County Sheriff’s patrol units are being outfitted with Itronix laptop computers, bar code readers, portable thermal printers and handheld signature pads that were purchased with a $32,000 grant obtained from the Nebraska Crime Commission.

Drivers license data is captured with the bar code scanner and automatically entered into the laptop computer. From there the officer can input time and place of the traffic stop and information about the offense. The fines and court costs are calculated along with the court appearance date.

At the end of each shift the officer downloads the information into the Sheriff’s Office computer system, it is then forwarded electronically to the County Attorney’s Office.

The entire system will save time. With the software it allows officers to remain in the field while doing reports instead of having to always return to the Sheriff’s Office to complete paper work. Additional software will be used for the various forms deputies have to carry with them.
