Applicant must be 21 years of age, 19 years of age for Correction Officer applicant.
High school Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate
Honorable Discharge from military service (if applicable)
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver's license
Applicants may not have any felony convictions, certain misdemeanor convictions.
Applicants must read, write, and speak English fluently, with no dysfunctional reading disorder
Normal hearing and or factory function
Eyesight of the strong eye 20/40 correctable to 20/20, weak eye 20/100 correctable to 20/40. Applicants who do not meet these standards may employ FDA approved soft contact lenses, in which case acuity must be correctable to 20/20 strong eye and 20/40 weak eye with no upper uncorrected limit. Normal color vision.
The Application Process:
The Sheriff’s Office hiring process is governed by the Platte County Sheriff’s Merit Commission.
After an eligibility list of qualified candidates is established the list remains active for a period of one year. Applications are only accepted during a designated period of time prior to testing.
Announcements of testing is done through local newspapers, our internet site and law enforcement bulletins.

below. Once an application period has closed, the applicants will be notified with the scheduled times for written testing. Following the written testing, oral interviews are conducted by the Merit Commission Board and an eligibility list is established.
If you happen to already be a certified law enforcement officer in another state, and your certification is accepted by the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center, you may be required to attend only the portion of the basic certification that would familiarize you with Nebraska law and/or any other areas the Training Center deems necessary.
Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary for deputy sheriff is $18.50 per
hour. Starting salary for corrections officer is
$14.87 per hour. Upon meeting satisfactory standards on annual performance reviews both deputies and corrections personnel can advance through a
5 step pay plan.
All uniform personnel received an additional $65.00 per month uniform allowance. All uniform personnel are required to purchase and upkeep their own uniforms. Uniform allowance is paid quarterly.
Compensatory time or pay is earned at 1 1/2 times the hourly rate for any time exceeding a normal work week, including court attendance and training.
The Platte County Sheriff’s Office currently recognizes twelve holidays per year. Personnel required to work on any of the twelve designated holidays can choose to receive compensatory pay at a time-and-a-half rate in lieu of taking time off at a later date.
Vacation leave is earned at 12 (96 hrs) working days per year during the first five years, 15
(120 hrs) working days per year from five to tens years employment, 20
(160 hrs) working days per year from ten to fifteen years employment and 25
(200 hrs) working days after fifteen years employment.
Paid Sick Leave:
Employees earn eight (8) hours per month sick leave. If sick leave is not used and a accumulation of 800 hours sick leave is reached, the employee can convert sick leave time toward vacation leave.
Paid Health Care Insurance:
Platte County currently offers each employee health insurance
partially paid by the County. If family coverage is wanted the employee is required a portion of that coverage.
Employees have to be employed by the County for a period of one year before they become vested in the County Retirement Plan. On becoming vested the County contributes 6.75% of the employees salary and the employee contributed 4.5% of their salary toward the retirement plan. If you are certified officer the County contributes 7.75% of the employees salary and the employee contributes 5.5%.
All equipment, except for uniforms is furnished to the employee by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.
