2007 OFFICER OF THE YEAR
Sheriff Neil Miller of Buffalo County was honored as Officer of the Year for the Nebraska Sheriffs’ Association at the NSA Fall Conference in Kearney. Sheriff Miller who was nominated by Hall County Sheriff Jerry Watson was presented his award by NSA President Terry Wagner.
Sheriff Miller was instrumental in establishing the South Central Area Law Enforcement Services (SCALES) as well as the work he completed with the Central Nebraska Regions for Interoperability Project (CNRI). The SCALES Project is a collaborative effort between the Sheriffs of Hall, Buffalo and Adams Counties and the Chief of Police from Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney. The six law enforcement administrators discuss the establishment of interagency investigative task force. The CNRI Project is a ten county interoperable communications project that began in March 2004, from a concept Sheriff Miller brought forward. His technical knowledge was a tremendous value which finally led to the system being activated in February 2006.
INDUCTED IN TO HALL OF FAME
Wilbur Gewecke was inducted into the Nebraska Sheriffs’ Association Hall of Fame at the 2007 NSA Conference in Kearney. Wilbur spent a year as a Border Patrol Agent for INS in 1948. In 1949 Wilbur and his wife moved to Kearney, NE where he interviewed with the Nebraska State Patrol. Wilbur served with the Nebraska State Patrol until 1954. In 1954, Phelps County Sheriff Royal Hanson was diagnosed with cancer, Wilbur was then asked to fill the term as Sheriff. Wilbur served as Phelps County Sheriff until 1971, while in that position he served as President of the Nebraska Sheriff’s Association in 1965. Following his tenure as Phelps County Sheriff, Wilbur worked as a Probation Officer for the Nebraska Supreme Court until his retirement in 1994.
Wilbur has maintained his interest in the Nebraska Sheriff’s Association with he and his wife Marcia assisting on a yearly basis at the Sheriff’s Association building during the Nebraska State Fair. Wilbur was presented his award by NSA President Terry Wagner.
Sheriff’s Recognized
Jefferson County Sheriff Nels Sorenson and Cass County Sheriff Bill Brueggemann were both recognized at the Nebraska Correctional Administrators and Managers Association annual conference held April 15-16, 2008 in Columbus. Sheriff Sorenson received an award for “Excellence in Jail Facility Operations” and Sheriff Brueggemann was awarded for “Excellence in Detention Facility Administration”. Both awards were presented by Nebraska Jail Standards.

CIVIL PROCESS CLASS
The Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center will offer a one day Civil Process course on the Friday after each Basic Training Graduation starting August 17, 2007. Dates for the course are: August 17, 2007 December 7, 2007 April 11, 2008 August 8, 2008 December 5, 2008 This course is open to all agencies and you can register by sending in a Specialized Enrollment Form to the Training Center or call Steve Gobel at 308-385-6030 Ext. 301
