PVLAPVLA is an unique literacy organization that evolved from a volunteer reading tutor group in the early 1980's to be a cornerstone of the Columbus community. Since 1990, PVLA has been an actively growing non-profit organization, that collaborates with Central Community College Adult Basic Education to respond to the educational needs of our community. PVLA is a United Way organization and has received great support for our programs. PVLA now offers:
Growth in Student EnrollmentDemand for adult education is increasing locally and nationally. Federal support to state Adult Education programs has NOT increased substantially. Specialized literacy grants has decreased making it difficult to offer services that families/adults in our community need. Approximately 70% of Columbus GED students test below 7th grade level in one or more test areas. Approximately 40% of the adults in the Basic Adult Education programs enrolled to learn or improve their English skills. PVLA has been selected as a co-recipient for the Taste
of Columbus in 2007-08. This is the fundraiser for the Columbus Chamber of
Commerce. This will allow PVLA to offer Family Literacy during most Adult class
periods and continue the multi-level ESL classes.
